README for OEexporter

Purpose:
To export email messages and address book information
from Outlook Express 5 or Entourage (Office:mac 2001 or
Office v.X) on your Mac and to import this data to Outlook
Express 5.5 or later on your PC (or to import into OE or
    Entourage on a Mac, too).

If the target email client is Outlook on your PC, you must
first follow the procedure below to get your email into
Outlook Express on your PC. Use Outlook's import option to
import the email from Outlook Express.

If you need to move email from PC to Mac, use OEimporter.

Disclaimer:
This comes "AS IS". It worked for me, so I hope it works
    for you!

Author:
Bill Wright (bwright_us@mac.com) with special credit to
Steve Friesan (steve@skyweyr.com). The OEexporter script
is his Archive Messages script called "Export as Indiv.
Msg Archive" with a couple of slight modifications. I
changed the log file name to include the date/time of the
export. Also, instead of each filename being derived from
the message's subject line, each filename follows the 8.3
format of "msgNNNN.eml" where NNNN goes from "0001" to
"9999". The counter is reset for each folder. The 8.3
formatted filenames are easier to bring over to a PC.
The file extension is also critical for Windows to
recognize the file as an Outlook Express message file.

Required software:

[CRLF does not run natively on MacOS X. So for the end-of-line
conversion step, you can do this from Classic mode, or look for
an equivalent conversion utility for MacOS X. Try an internet

Exporting Email Messages from Mac-to-PC Procedure:
    On Mac:
    1. Compile the OEexporter and OEexporter4Entourage
scripts by activating the Script Editor (Macintosh
        HD:Apple Extras:AppleScript:Script Editor). For
        each file:
          - Go to File->Open and select the script file.
          - Once the window opens, click the "Check Syntax"
button on the upper ride side. When prompted
for the location of either Outlook Express or
            Microsoft Entourage, navigate through the
folders in the window to locate (and choose)
            the application by that name.
          - It should compile without errors.
          - Go to File->Save As and select the Kind: to
be "Compiled Script". Save it in the same
folder as the original text scrip file,
replacing the original with the compiled one.

    2. Move the compile script file to the proper folder
        where it can be executed.

        For Outlook Express:
          - Drag the compiled OEexporter script file to
Outlook Express' "Script Menu Items" folder
located in the folder containing the Outlook
Express application (e.g. Microsoft Internet 5:
Outlook Express 5.02 folder:Script Menu Items).

        For Entourage:
          - Drag the compiled OEexporter4Entourage script
file to Entourage's "Entourage Script Menu Items"
folder located under Entourage's Documents folder
            (e.g. :Documents:Microsoft User Data:
Entourage Script Menu Items). NOTE: This is not
the Script Menu Items in the folder where you
            installed Microsoft Office).

    3. Get into Outlook Express or Entourage and select the
        OEexporter (or OEexport4Entourage) script under
the Script menu (the scrolling paper icon). This
script exports all messages under the chosen Outlook
Express or Entourage folder and writes them to a
corresponding hierarchy of folders in the Finder. All
filenames follow the "msgNNNN.eml" file format.

        Answer the following prompts:
          - Choose the top Outlook Express/Entourage folder to
export. The option is "All folders" or "Selected
folders". Select the former unless you only want
to export a subset of your email folders.
          - Do you wish to turn on logging (if you select this,
a file called, OEexporter.log is created
in the same folder containing the application).
          - Answer the confirmation dialog box.
          - Select the Finder folder, called "Export", into
which the hierarchy of folders and exported message
            files will be placed.

When the script is done, a final dialog box will
pop up saying the export completed.

    4. Set up the CRLF utility to (a) change the end-of-line
character from CR (Macs) to CRLF (PCs) and also
to set the Creator of each file to be MSNM (Outlook
Express). After downloading and installing CRLF,
        hold down the
